How do software industries get away from passing off "community forums" as any kind of fucking support?

The place I coop at is fucking terrible about this. Their microprocessors are great and all but they rely on the community too much for support. Knowledge bases are always a joke, I don't see why you were even bothering there.

Being on both sides of the story now (trying to get support and seeing how support is actually done), I wouldn't even bother asking the company for help. You usually end up googling around and reading other peoples idiot questions (Indian graduate students in my case) with vague or meaningless answers. Unless you happen to know an expert or can easily get in direct contact with one, many times even pursuing help from the website and/or company is pointless.

this reminds me of Gibson.
to say that they were using nitro on guitars they cut their water based stuff with nitro to get a "kind of" nitro finish... just enough to marker it as so. the thing is your only allowed to spray nitro lacquer if you do less than 100 guitars a year, or something to that extent. gibson probably does about 100 a month. the EPA would fine them something like $20 each year for doing this but gibson just budgeted it into its advertising funds. this year the EPA finally caught on and is saying were not just fining anymore, you need to stop this or KAKOW.
